God & Stuff

Ok so here is the deal… I am a Liberal Christian… yeah we do exist! I do alot of reading and I think it is important for all people of faith to really examine what they believe and why… Really. I need to be prepared to speak intelligently about my faith and I have to be honest about where I am with my faith. Any Christian who is not prepared to do that is really not prepared to follow that path that Christ laid out for us… which is not a good thing.

I have a deep and abiding interest in all things spiritual and am very interested in topics related to Christian Philosophy and the history of religion in general. I found A History of God very interesting and highly recommend it. It is pretty academic and leans a bit to the agnostic end of the spectrum (she is a former nun gone native afterall). I also really like In Search of Paul. I really came to appreciate him by reading this book. He was one tough cookie… and very misunderstood when taken out of context. I found this book very insightful and again… it is pretty academic but it is very well done. For something a bit more heartfelt I really like The Journey of Desire. Although it is aimed at men… I was really moved by the book and it really had an impact on me as a person.

I believe that anyone who is not a liberal can not truly call themselves Christian. The red-letter words that stuck with me were the lesson of the Good Samaritan and the Sermon on the Mount and the treatment of Mary Magdalene and the rare flare of anger at the money changers.

The constant anger and self-righteousness I often see with my contemporary Christians quite frankly turns me away from organized religion.

Good on you!
